Maharashtra: MBBS student falls from 2nd floor, Critically Injured

Mumbai: In a tragic incident, a female MBBS student attached to BYL Nair Hospital in Mumbai Central fell from the second floor, critically injuring herself. The medico is believed to have sustained grave injuries to the head and is admitted at JJ Hospital in Byculla.


The police are currently investigating whether it was a suicide attempt or the MBBS medico accidentally fell from the two-storied residential-cum-commercial building in Madanpura. The incident reportedly took place on Sunday, 25th November.


A post-incident witness, who runs a mobile shop on the ground floor of the building, informed The TOI, “I heard a loud thud and saw people rushing towards my shop. I stepped out and saw a woman lying between two parked bikes. She was bleeding. No one knew her.” Her purse was lying next to her.

Immediately, the bystanders called up the women and children's helpline '109'.


TOI reports that when some people searched for her phone to call her family members, her phone was found without the SIM card. No one saw the MBBS student entering the building, added the daily.


Later when the police arrived, the MBBS student was rushed to JJ hospital and her parents were informed about the incident.


The doctors at the JJ Hospital informed that the MBBS student was critical and is likely to need ventilator support. When asked about the medico’s condition, JJ Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Sanjay Surase said that the injured student was brought to the emergency department in an unconscious condition at 8.40pm. “She has a serious head injury. We are carrying out investigations,” he added.

Shocked on being informed about the terrible incident the MBBS student went through, Nair Hospital’s Dean said that the medico is an 'exceptionally bright student' and the incident has taken the medical college by surprise.
