Fire at Kolkata Medical College- 2nd incident in 3 months

Kolkata: A fire broke out in the Hematology department of the state-run Medical College and Hospital triggering panic among the medical institute’s staff and admitted patients. No one has been injured in the blaze.

This is second such incident in three months in a medical facility. Earlier the medical college’s dispensary gripped fire, following which 250 patients were evacuated.

On 31^st December, three firefighting vehicles were pressed into service to douse flames when a fire broke out inside a fridge at the Hematology department on the 2nd floor of Calcutta Medical College in the central part of the city, official sources informed UNI.

The incident took place around 4 am on the second floor of the medical college building. The fire was first noticed by a private security guard around 4 30 am and according to the eyewitnesses, there was a sound and then smoke enveloped around the fridge.

News 18 reports that the security guard noticed thick smoke billowing out and he immediately alerted the hospital staff. Subsequently, the local police station and fire department were alerted and the fire was brought under control. Three firefighting vehicles were used to clear the smoke.

Barring the fridge, there had been no injury to anybody or any damage to other movable and immovable property. A firefighting vehicle was placed at the site to keep watch.

“It was minor fire and firemen doused the flames promptly. There was no need for patients to be evacuated. We are looking into the cause of the fire,” Director General of Fire Services informed The Hindustan Times.

On October 3, a fire had broken out in the dispensary of the Medical College and Hospital. At that time, around 250 patients were evacuated from the medical college premises.
