Depression, Lagging Behind in Studies: PGIMS final year MBBS student Consumes Poison

Rohtak: A final year MBBS student of the 2014 batch at the Pandit Bhagwat Dayal Sharma Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Rohtak (PGIMS Rohtak), allegedly committed suicide at his hostel room on the institute campus by consuming a poisonous substance.


The deceased student's body was found two days later his death.


According to recent media accounts, the MBBS student was depressed after his mother's death last year and had been lagging behind his studies.


The MBBS student was found dead after his father had called up his son's hostel friends when he failed to contact his son for a long time.

Informing about the unfortunate incident, the police officials said that the deceased student's friends reached his room and found it locked from inside and noticed a foul smell emanating from there.


The police were called immediately. After they arrived, the police broke open the door and found the MBBS student lying dead on his bed.


Police also recovered a notebook in which he had written that no one responsible for his death and he was taking the extreme step on his own, reports TOI.


The body was sent for postmortem and as per the preliminary investigations; the deceased student had consumed poisonous substance and committed suicide. The police had found his body 2-3 days after his death. Further action would be taken based on the post-mortem report, police added.


It has been reported that the student had been stressed since his mother's death last year. Punjab Kesari reports that the MBBS student had tried to end his life earlier too by slitting his veins but was saved. PGIMS authorities had arranged counselling session for him but it had no good effect on him.


In addition to what de-motivated him was that he lagging behind his practicals and some exams, which added to his stress. While all his batchmates passed out in December 2018, he was staying at his campus hostel to complete his pending assignments.


PGIMS Director Dr Rohtash Yadav told TOI, "The victim MBBS student's mother had died last year and he was under stress since. PGIMS authorities had arranged counselling session for him, he said, adding that final conclusion about the death could only be made after autopsy report."
