Chandigarh: A security guard, Balbir Singh on Saturday is accused of having shot a female nursing student at a college where he worked. The case is understood to have been a sexual harassment one.

The accused entered the hostel premises in the night on Friday, where the victim resided and is alleged to have fired a shot at her. It is believed that other girl students showed bravery and overpowered him just as he was about to fire at the nursing student again. He is believed to have sustained a wound in the scuffle that ensued. It is believed that the accused, who is presently admitted in a hospital, used a co-workers gun for the job.

The victim, who is presently under treatment at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, revealed that she had lodged a complaint about the victim's behavior earlier, as well, but the authorities had taken no action. The police, on the other hand, claimed that the matter was reported to them at around 10 pm and they immediately left for the spot.

Harvinder Singh Virk, SP, Investigation, told the Tribune, “A preliminary probe into the incident revealed that the accused was in love with the girl and shot at her in a fit of rage. When he saw the bullet brushing through the victim’s temple, he tried to fire another shot but alert girl students overpowered him. An incidental shot ruptured his thigh.”

“We will question the college management on the security lapse, as only two guards are deployed at the college,” Virk added .A police case is yet to be registered.
