Work pressure not the reason for medical student suicide: PGI Dean

Chandigarh: Language barrier among students coming to the southern parts of the country to the north seem compounded as patient communication due to language differences gradually becomes a communication hurdle.


According to Dean, Academics, Prof Rajesh Kumar homesickness seems to have been the primary reason for the suicide of the 24-year-old doctor. Inability to be able to communicate with the patients may have compounded the problem he added.


The deceased Krishna Prasath R is believed to have been housed in a hotsl for the first time. However, he was not facing any stress at work place, clarifies Prof Rajesh Kumar.


“First three months are given to the students to adjust to the environment at the medical institute. The doctors pursuing their MD courses are directly under the watch of their senior residents. There are various helplines to address the issues of the doctors. Even the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) have separate helpline to address the problem. We are constantly striving to address the problem, but in this case (suicide of Dr Krishan) there could be a lapse somewhere,” Rajesh Kumar told the Tribune


Meanwhile, senior doctors today are making attempts to ease stress levels among junior residents,/ primarily as a step up after suicide committed by the 24-year-old doctor Krishna Prasath R.


PGI revelations do not show him as someone suffering from any work pressure. According to information he had been shifted to the radio diagnosis department which had less work pressure.
