Thiruvanathapuram: The medical college ladies residing in the women’s hostel have taken offense to CCTV installation on the premises.and registered their protest recently. The authorities looking at the unrest decided to constitute a committee of students and representatives to reach a decision on the matter.

The Medical College authorities, however, reiterated the Medical Council of India’s mandatory decision to install CCTV cameras on the campus and hostels.

The students, however, question the college authorities decision to station this installation in the canteen and central hall of the hostel.

"How can they install CCTVs in spaces like central hall and canteen where the inmates relax and go have food? It is pathetic that they intrude our privacy, stating such silly reasons when MCI has clearly mentioned that CCTVs should be installed in vulnerable spots. No CCTV has been installed in men's hostel, because the officials know they will protest, while they think we will remain silent," said fourth-year MBBS students and inmate of the hostel,

"A committee was also formed to monitor the facilities and communicate the requirements of inmates. We have called off protest for now," said Harikrishnan MR, Medical College Unit Secretary of SFI.

The college spokesperson said MCI regulations were being adhered to, though the installation work is not complete.

"It is to prevent any instances of ragging in the hostel that the cameras were partly installed, but it is yet to be connected. It is for the safety of students. A decision regarding the functioning of CCTVs will be taken after considering the demands of student committee," said the student' s spokesperson to TOI.
