Nagpur: The Bombay High Court’s Nagpur bench has for the second time round sought clarification from the state government on the issue of regular appointment of Indira Gandhi Government Medical College (IGGMC) (Mayo) Dean by December 13. It had earlier sounded off the state on why contempt action should not be taken against it for not having taken on a Dean until now; despite having given an undertaking at the last hearing

The Principal Secretary, Department of Medical Education had given an undertaking in the court that a permanent Dean would be appointed by the college until June. Presently, Dr. Anuradha Shrikhande is playing Acting Dean.

The government explained that the appointment was being considered, however, the court refused to accept the explanation, seeking a detailed reply on it.

The Court presided over by Justice Swapna Joshi and Justice Bhushan Dharmadhikari, was responding to a PIL filed by CH Sharma and others in the court regarding the paucity of facility all across the state of Vidarbha, in Government Medical Colleges and Hospitals.

Earlier, Anup Gilda, the amicus curiae had brought to the notice of the court that the promised June appointments including that of the Dean, for the academic year 2017-18, were still lying pending, as no action had been taken on them by the authorities, even after the deadline.

The court had expressed its wish to dispose of the PIL, during the last hearing, however, Anup Gilda persuaded the judiciary, otherwise, as he said that issues in the PIL still lay pending and with the petition disposed, the matter would be kept dragging, in the absence of Court’s vigilance, reports
TOI.

There would also be a fund bottleneck too, if the judiciary disposed of the matter he stated.

The amicus curiae pointed that there were 7 major subjects that were being raised in the petition and some of them were as follows:

  • Formation of Akola and Gondia GMCs,

  • Vacant positions in super Specialty Hospital (SSH), MBBS seats in IGGMC among others.
