West Bengal:WBJEE medical entrance results announced

Kolkata: Thursday afternoon saw the end of all trepidation with the announcement of the results of West Bengal’s Joint Entrance Exam for medical entrance.

Names of 12,183 candidates shown on the list, out of the 54,889 who appeared for the exam. The list announced a resident of Salt lake and student of Aurobindo Institute of Education as the topper. Of the ten top meritorious, one is a girl.

The top ten rankers constituted of four ISC,two CBSC and another four from the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education. Off these first ten position holders, three hail from Kolkata while the rest are from districts of Bengal.

This is to be the last year for the West Bengal Entrance Test Exam to be hosted for medical education aspirants. 2017 is going to see a new dawn for those aspiring for MBBS and Dental Admission clearance, for they will have to clear the all India National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) that is meant to bring all medical aspirants in the country under a single umbrella. NEET is supposed to be the all encompassing competitive test for students wanting admission into any medical or dental course for the academic year beginning 2017.

75,862 students enrolled for WBJEE Medical exam this year. The number includes 44,258 students who opted to appear for both medical and engineering exam 31,604 who enrolled only for medical entrance exam.

This years MBBS spread of 2,550 seats would cover 17 medical colleges, of which 13 happen to be government run while the rest are private. The dental colleges in the state being five in number.

This year’s exam was conducted in an atmosphere of strife and confusion. Scheduled to be held on May 17, it was cancelled due to a supreme court direction which stated that there would be only one medical exam-NEET all across the country.

The exams was held after a lot of turmoil and confusion. It was originally scheduled to be held on May 17 along with the state level engineering entrance exam. But it had to be cancelled after a Supreme Court directive that stated there will be only one medical entrance exam - NEET - for the entire country.

The states were later empowered to hold their own medical entrance exam for one last time through an Ordinance. Following the ordinance WBJEE board, in consultation with the state health department, decided on the date and modalities of the exam.
