West Bengal University of Health Sciences to offer 30 additional seats for PG courses: No MCI recognition yet on these seats
West Bengal University of Health Sciences has announced to offer two new PG courses- Diploma in Gynaecology and Obstetrics (DGO) and Diploma in Child Health (DCH). The varsity is likely to offer 30 additional seats for the two courses. However, these additional seats are not yet approved by MCI.
Out of the 30 more seats to be offered by the university, Chittaranjan Seva Sadan will be given permission to admit 10 more students each in the DGO and DCH courses. BC Roy Hospital will be allowed to offer 10 additional seats for the DCH course.An earlier report in TOI implied this move by the university to cover up a situation of vacant seats lying inside. By offering additional seats in these two courses the university is hoping to fill the empty seats. There is reported to be 35 PG medical seats, which includes MD and MS seats vacant this year. The reason cited for this is students opting to shift out of Bengal- the same students had earlier opted for admission in the university. Toi suggests that this has led to a serious crisis situation with 35 seats for PG trainees now lying vacant; therefore the move to offer more seats.WBUHS controller of examinations K P Sinha said to TOI that the aim is to have enough specialist doctors, as both gynaecologists and paediatricians are of much demand in the state. He said that those who passed the West Bengal Post Graduate Medical Admission Test 2016 are eligible for admission to these seats. "Those qualifying from these seats can get state jobs and can practice in Bengal as specialists, even though their course is not recognized by MCI. We will even provide them with stipendEven we will be providing stipends to the students who will be undergoing these courses under these additional seats." He said that these DGO and DCH seats were earlier there but were withdrawn. Now WBUHS is again introducing them.
ABVP medical chapter convenor Dr Indranil Khan, however implied by asking that the fate of students taking admission in the additional seats is not clear, as these are not recognised by MCI.
Dr Nirmal Maji, chairman of assembly standing committee on health implied that the matter will be pursued by him to gain MCI recognition.
