Kolkata: The West Bengal government sought a report from the Calcutta National Medical College on an agitation by junior doctors who said one of them was assaulted by the relatives of a patient who died at the hospital.

The Dean of the college, Partha Pratim Mukherjee, said the junior doctors are not on strike but are protesting against an assault on one of the physicians and demanding security.

"Work is going on. The report is being prepared. We will be sending the report to the health department on the incident," Mukherjee said.

Relatives of the patient, who was brought to the emergency ward with brain haemorrhage and died while being treated, allegedly beat up a doctor accusing him and the rest of the staff of negligence.

Mukherjee denied the charge, saying: "The treatment had started in time. There was no negligence. They beat up our doctor badly and he got a blackened eye apart from other injuries."
