Vijayapura, Karnataka to get government medical college

Vijayapura: Health Minister, Shivananda Patil has floated a proposal for setting up of a government medical college sanctioned to Vijayapura district. The proposal submitted by the minister urges the state government to consider the construction of a medical college on the government hospital premises.


Speaking to The Hindu, District Surgeon, Mahendra Kapse revealed that as soon as the minister came to power he directed him to prepare a detailed proposal for submission to the government seeking a grant for the proposed medical institution.


The proposal sent earlier by his predecessor was for reason unknown set aside he revealed.


According to Kapse, the hospital was equipped with basic healthcare amenities for a medical college. The hospital was equipped with 250 beds, in different departments he added.


“We receive around 1,200 out-patients and nearly 100 in-patients every day. Patients come here from places within a 60-km radius. Besides this, a super-specialty 100-bed unit is being constructed here. All these facilities are needed for any medical hospital,” he added.


He elaborated that 140 acres of land was available on the hospital campus, of which 60 acres still lay vacant. This he said could be used in the construction of the college.


The district hospital has also prepared a proposal and submitted to the government said Mr. Patil whose dream it has always been.


Speaking to the Hindu , Mr. Patil said that having become health minister he would now ensure that the district got medical college during his tenure itself.


“When I was MLA, I had submitted several proposals. But for some reason, the government in the past did not consider the demands. However, now, I myself have become the Minister of Health and I will try my best to get a government medical college for the district,” he reiterated.
