Agra: Sarojini Naidu Medical College(SNMC), one of the earliest medical schools of the country is all set to redo its burns unit to develop the unit as a zero infection ward. A Rs.1 crore centre sanction for renovation has already been granted. At present, the unit receives a footfall of 25 burn injury patients daily.

"Of the 25 cases, some are minor injuries where patients are discharged after first aid. However, half of them are referred to the hospital's burn ward, which has only six beds. Doctors have a tough time treating the patients as there is a dearth of beds and other resources," an official of the hospital administration said. The sanctioned budget is to help procure an increased number of beds and some modern facilities for the ward as well, he added.

Dr Ajay Agarwal, Chief Medical Superintendent of the hospital told TOI, "Besides, adding beds and bringing in modern facilities to the ward, our main focus will be to develop the unit as zero infection ward as burn patients require extra care and an infection-free atmosphere."

"We are under process to complete the pre-renovation formalities. Once the paperwork is done, we will begin the task to develop the burn ward," Agarwal added.
