UP: Mahoba visited by Health Department team to study prospects of AIIMS-like facility

Lucknow: The will of the masses in Mahoba district for an AIIMS like medical college seems to be taking form with a team from the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and UP's Medical Education Department, recently visiting the district, to explore the possibility of such an educational and healthcare facility in the district.


Since 2015, under the leadership of the Bundeli Samaj, Mohaba locals have been resorting to novel ways of catching the attention of the men who matter in the hierarchy, as well as the political leadership of the country. These efforts are being made to have their wish turn to reality. They have tried to draw the attention of Prime Minister Modi towards their demand for a medical college in the district.


Over 2 lakh letters, including one of 5,000-plus pages penned in Sanskrit by Muslims, were sent through registered post between March and June 2015.


Fasting by Hindus during Ramzan, 5,001 women sending rakhis to press for the cause, 10,000 schoolchildren painting good wishes for PM Modi and urging him to fulfill their demand and last but not the least- relay fasts being organized by Bundeli Samaj people's group, are some of the measures undertaken to move those in power towards the fulfillment of the district’s cause.


"Health ministry is exploring the possibility of upgrading the government hospital in the district to a medical college, so we made a field visit to the district and would be submitting our report shortly," said Dr RS Mohil, Consultant Surgeon, Safdarjung Hospital who was accompanied by Dr RK Sahu, Faculty, Medicine, Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital Delhi.


UP Medical Education Director General, Dr VN Tripathi, confirmed that the idea of a medical college was being explored following the people's movement in Mahoba. "The experts had come to access the existing medical care facilities and to suggest adequate measures to improve the status. They also explored the possibility of inclusion of the hospital in the second phase of the on going scheme to develop government hospitals into a medical college," he said.


Expressing his joy over the development Bundeli Samaj, Convenor, Tara Patkar said that the campaign would continue till met with a concrete translation of thought ."The response has filled us with hope and we will continue the campaign till some action is visible," he said.
