Unfortunate: Bankura Sammilani Medical College Medical Superindent takes his life by hanging

Durgapur: Deputy Superintendent of Bankura Sammilani Medical College Hospital (BSMCH), Dr Nimai Debnath (56), allegedly took his life by hanging himself from the ceiling of his room on Friday, in his house at Sagarbhanga, under Coke Oven police station limits, in Durgapur. Statesman reports that Dr Debnath was suffering from a mental illness of late. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.


Dr. Debnath had also served as the Superintendent of Durgapur Sub Divisional Hospital, earlier. A pass out of Bidhan Chandra Institution in Durgapur, Dr Nimai did his MBBS at Nilratan Sarkar Medical College in Kolkata.


Dr Nimai is believed to have committed the act while his wife was away attending her father’s funeral ceremony at her parent’s house in Sagarbhanga area of Durgapur. Though his wife had wanted him to accompany her, the doctor said that he would go to the bank before joining her at her parental home, reports Statesman.


When his wife returned from her parental house around 2 PM she found one of the rooms on the first floor of the house bolted from inside. On breaking open, Dr. Debnath’s body was found hanging from the ceiling.


The police reached the spot immediately after being informed about the incident and sent the dead body to the Durgapur sub-divisional hospital for post-mortem. An unnatural death case has been registered. The police suspect him to have committed suicide.
