Unfortunate: 2 MBBS Aspirants commit Suicide over Failure in NEET 2019

Tamil Nadu: Depressed by failure in National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for MBBS and BDS courses, NEET 2019 whose results were announced yesterday, two MBBS aspirants have allegedly committed suicide.

According to recent media accounts, a 17-year-old girl from nearby Tirupur allegedly committed suicide just after the results were announced apparently dejected over failing to clear NEET entrance exam. She hanged herself at her house and was declared brought dead at the hospital.

She was hopeful of clearing the test and joining the medical course as she scored 490 marks in the 12th Standard, according to police.

In the other unfortunate case, an MBBS aspirant from Pattukottai district has also taken the extreme step, succumbing to depression over failing to pass the examination, according to News 18.

Both the MBBS aspirants were meritorious students with more than 90 per cent in 12th standard.

As many as 59,785 students out of the total 1,23,078 students who appeared for NEET 2019 from Tamil Nadu cleared the test this year.

In 2017, a 17-year-old student, who scored 1176 marks out of 1200 in her Class XII exam had committed suicide as she could not get a good NEET score. Her death had triggered state-wide outrage with all political parties and students coming together against the entrance exam.

Thereafter, in the runup to the Lok Sabha election, the ruling AIADMK in its manifesto promised to get an exemption for the Tamil Nadu students from NEET till such time they were able to cope up with the improved new syllabus.

On the other hand, the DMK in its manifesto said the national entrance test would be scrapped if its alliance came to power.

After its legal efforts and legislative measures to avoid NEET failed, the AIADMK government had set up coaching centres to train students for the test.

The BJP has said there was no need to scrap NEET for medical admissions.
