Itanagar: The incessant delays in faculty recruitment and infrastructural completions at Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS) have led to the project suffering a setback in the commencement of its session in August this year. The Medical Council of India (MCI) did not give it a consenting nod owing to its present unsatisfactory status, calling it not up to the mark.

The Council team which inspected the medical college found Infrastructural and faulty recruitment deficiencies.

According to the TRIHMS Director, Dr Moji Jini told Arunachal times the MCI team had directed the department to speed up the pace of college building construction and complete the recruitment process for a 106 doctors within this year in order to be able to get an early consent by the council to facilitate commencement of academic session of the state’s much-awaited medical college project.

With the 3rd recruitment phase over for a total of 99 faculty members, the file is currently with the chief minister’s office informed Dr. Jini.

“The MCI has been repeatedly asking us to speed up the faculty recruitment process saying that if we do not achieve the target soon, the MCI would not give its nod of approval to the state’s medical college”, he stated. He feared that it would take another 6 years for the project to take off if rejected by the MCI now.

Lastly, the pending litigation against the college in the Gauhati High Court challenging its present recruitment process is an issue hampering the early launch of the project also.

Elaborating on the pending case, the TRIHMS Director clarified that unlike claims made by the petitioners, the recruitment process was not depriving any eligible candidate of non- Arunachal Pradesh Health Services cadre.
“It is usual practice for the recruitment authorities to give preference to state health employees, while rest of the candidates can be recruited through open competition”, he explained.

Nevertheless with the court directing the authorities to maintain a status quo on the recruitment issue, that all the above issues have resulted in the project being delayed for a terribly long time span.
