Tragic Accident: 3rd year MBBS student of VIMSAR drowns in Hirakud Dam

Sambalpur: In an unfortunate incident, a third-year MBBS student of Burla-based Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), drowned while taking bath in Hirakud Dam in Sambalpur district recently.

The student was declared brought dead when his friends and fire personnel took him to the institute.

As mentioned in a report by UNI, the deceased MBBS student has been identified as one Sumit Singh, aged 20, a resident of New Delhi.


The tragic incident took place at around 1.30 pm on March 4 Monday, when six boys including the medico went to the Pahadi Baba temple near Jawahar Minar in Burla end of the dam for darshan on account of auspicious Maha Sivaratri.



The MBBS student along with his friends went for a bath in the reservoir before visiting the temple when the tragedy occurred. The medico somehow went deep into the water and drowned.


Although the medico's friends and some locals present at the spot tried to rescue him; they could not trace him, reports Odisha TV.

Later, after getting information about the incident, fire personnel and police rushed to the spot, rescued the victim from the reservoir and took him to VIMSAR where the MBBS student was declared brought dead.

The police officials informed TOI, "Singh had gone to the fishing point with five other students to bathe when he drowned. Fire brigade personnel rescued Singh and took him to VIMSAR, where he was declared dead."

The student's family has been informed about the incident.


According to a report by Odisha Sun Times, the body has been sent for autopsy and. An unnatural death case was registered in this regard at Burla police station.
