TN: Dr MGR Medical University website to carry the re structured MBBS syllabus soon

Chennai: Dr. MGR Medical University will soon be displaying the re-structured MBBS syllabus set in accordance with the Medical Council of India (MCI) guidelines for the academic year 2016-2017. This is to be part of the re-structuring effort of curriculum, including recent concepts.

The new syllabus incorporates bio-ethics, integrated teaching and central council’s amendments as part of the re structured syllabus.

Vice Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University, Dr S Geethalakshmi, speaking at the 28th Convocation of the university said other proposals to be considered for inclusion were:

  • Central monitoring for all examination centers to ensure fair conduct of examinations and removal of vigilance squads for supervision, an effort towards overhauling of examination evaluation system

  • feasibility of online evaluation

  • fellowship sports medicine for undergraduate students

  • introduction of an Anti-doping laboratory to provide certificate course training in anti-doping and also next to online family medicine program

  • online lifestyle disorders management course


The last two points stated above being part of the university being recognized as a nodal center for bioethics teaching and training the Vice Chancellor, further stated.

Dr Jagdish Prasad, Director-General of Health Services, Union Health Ministry, another eminent speaker on the occasion mentioned Research and Development as one of the key determinants of shaping healthcare delivery. He said the Union government Department of Health Research, aimed to bring modern health technology to people by translating medical innovations into products and introducing them into the public and private health delivery system at reasonable costs.

He urged the students to pursue medical ethics. He emphasized on students serving patients in a humble and humane manner.

Degrees were given away to a total of 20,489 candidates from dental, ayush and allied health science courses. Endowment gold medals was conferred on 92 candidates, endowment silver medal on 20 candidates and Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University silver medal was awarded to 69 candidates.
Dr K Bhavana, Melmaruvathur Adhiparasakthi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research,Kancheepuram bagged seven medals - five endowment gold medals, one silver medal and one university medal, a brilliant performance indeed! . Two other oustanding performers bagged five gold medals each.

The university also conferred Lifetime Achievement Awards on Dr S Mohamed Rela, Professor , Liver Surgery and Transplantation and Hepatologist, Global Hospitals, Chennai and Dr Mohan Kameswaran, Senior ENT Consultant, Madras ENT Research Foundation, Chennai.
