TN Members of RS demand permanent exemption to state from NEET

New Delhi: Tamil Nadu Members in the Rajya Sabha raised the issue of National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and demanded that the state be given permanent exemption from the examination.


Raising the issue during Zero Hour, AIADMK member A K Selvaraj said Tamil Nadu should be exempted from NEET, a national level single entrance test conducted for admission to approximately 90,000 MBBS and BDS seats, as the students don't need the examination.


DMK member Kanimozhi too demanded permanent exemption of the state from the NEET. AIADMK Member A Navaneethakrishnan while objecting to NEET said that many students were on the verge of committing suicides due to tough question papers.


Responding to the issue, Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar said, "We have discussed with everybody concerned and the matter is in advanced state and sub judice. The Health Ministry is also examining."


There was brief uproar by the Members from the state who trooped into the Well, protesting on the issue. Deputy Chairman P J Kurien asked the Members to go back to their seats as their concern was take care of by the government.


Union Health Minister J P Nadda, responding on the NEET issue, said the Tamil Nadu government had come out with a legislation and the Health Ministry had already sent its response. The papers were at present with the President's Office and issue was being followed.
