Chennai: The Medical Council of India (MCI) has recently given its nod to offer 4 Super-Specialty (SS) courses with a total of 13 seats at the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital from the next academic year of 2020-21.

According to a recent report by TOI, the medical college authorities received the MCI's nod to conduct classes for the four Super-Specialty courses Neurology, Cardiology, Medical Gastroenterology and Surgical Oncology from the next academic year.

The permission was granted to the Medical College following an inspection conducted by the MCI in February this year. The institute had applied for the SS seats in December 2018.

As per the assessment report, the Coimbatore Medical College had adequate infrastructure to impart education the four Super-Specialty courses Neurology, Cardiology, Medical Gastroenterology and Surgical Oncology.

Based on the said recommendation, the MCI Board gave its permission to the medical college to initiate the SS courses with 13 seats of which 4 each have been allotted to neurology, cardiology and medical gastroenterology, while surgical oncology has been sanctioned 1 seat.

The SS courses will begin from the academic year of 2020-2021 i.e. next year.

Welcoming the sanctioning of seats, the Coimbatore Medical College Dean Dr B Ashokan stated that these seats are going to be a major help to them offering more advanced treatment and treat more patients.

He told TOI, "For the first three specialisations if we take four students every year, we will have 12 students in those three departments. While most of the heads and professors leave by evening, these super-speciality students, who have completed post-graduation in the above fields and are on par with many assistant professors, will be available 24/7 on shifts and we will be able to treat any emergency in those fields immediately."

Mentioning that number of endoscopies and colonoscopies can be increased at the medical college, the Dean gave an example stating, "If a patient comes with vomiting of blood due to haemorrhaging or cirrhosis, the new doctors will immediately perform an endoscopy and control the situation. The hospital already performs 20 endoscopies a day and colonoscopies twice a week. This can also be increased if required," he said.

As of now, the medical college offers 3 super-speciality courses including paediatric, neurosurgery and plastic surgery.
