TN: MCI inspects KAP Viswanatham GMC for 50 seat additions

Tiruchi: A Medical Council of India (MCI) team comprising of three members has paid a visit to the K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medical College, to check the infrastructural, faculty and patient care facilities of the institution. The team which visited the hospital on Wednesday, has expressed overall satisfaction over the changes made by the hospital administration. The variations made by the hospital, are all geared towards getting the apex body’s sanction for fifty additional MBBS seats, to the existing one hundred . A few existing discrepancies, however, have to be done away with- before the MCI’s final nod. It is believed that if the college succeeds in getting the MCI approval for its fifth batch, the educational body might consider granting long term approval for the fifty additional seats .


The MCI conducted a check of the college facilities including class rooms, hostels, laboratories and others available on the college campus. They also visited the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH), which is attached to the medical college. During their visit to the hospital premises the officials took stock of in-patients and out-patients in the medical college hospital; verifying the available faculty members attached to the medical college. A cross check for irregularities was done, keeping in mind whether, earlier shortcomings, observed by the apex body had been corrected .


The MCI team also met with the paramedical staff, nurses and faculty of the medical college hospital . The Dean of the hospital, Mary Lily apprised the team of the efforts made by the college to meet the MCI yardstick for introduction of additional seats to the existing seat strength of the college. It is understood that the educational body has expressed satisfaction over the college's infrastructural up gradation for fifty additional admissions, for the year 2017-18. According to informed sources, the college will be submitting its report directly to the MCI, for being granted the increase in seat numbers.


It is believed, that KAP Viswanatham Medical College has been making difficult strides in order to meet with the MCI requirements every year, for the additional number of fifty seats. The college has been able to acquire permission for four batches this far, since 2012-13. It is believed, the fifth approval will result in long term approval of the 50 additional admissions.
