Chennai: Authorities of the Union Territory of Puducherry and management of a private medical college have been ordered by the Madras High Court to give admission to a woman PG medical student.

The Bench comprising Justice M. Sundar & Chief Justice Indira Banerjee have passed the order on a contempt petition moved by Dr. K. Brinda.

The petitioner was discouraged by not being given admission to an M.S. Course in General Surgery in Arupadai Veedu Medical College of Puducherry. This was done despite a single Judge of Madras High Court ordering allotment of the seat to her in June, 2017.

The Bench as per the earlier order of the court, had instructed that Dr. Brinda was entitled admission, on an interim payment of Rs. 10 lakh .

The college authorities, it is alleged have been trying to hinder facilitation of court orders for admissions by saying that all seats were already filled and since the candidate had not deposited the entire fee, within the time allotted, the seat had been given away to another reports Hindu.

“We are informed that the fee then demanded by the college is Rs 40 lakh. The act of filling the seat is a nullity in the eye of law, the same being patently in violation of the order of this court,” the Bench said.

The directive of the court asked for compliance of the Order by Wednesday.
