TN: Apollo’s Text Book of Medicine hits the stand

Chennai: A textbook on Medicine by a group of Indian doctors has hit the stands. Launched by the Apollo Hospitals,’ Chairman, Pratap C. Reddy, the book is a comprehensive work of Dr. TV Devarajan, a Dr BC Roy, Padma Sri awardee and a 1959 graduate from Stanley Medical College. A product of eleven years of Dr. Devarajan's labour, the book has eleven chapters written by him and twenty two other chapters contributed from forty Apollo doctors from all over the country.


It is a comprehensive read on common water-borne diseases in India, diseases of the Mediterranean region, and alternative systems of medicine.


“Medical books are generally out of reach for students ,but are must-haves to make the right diagnoses,” said Dr. Devarajan, Editor-in-chief of Apollo’s Text Book of Medicine and Emeritus Professor at Arupadai Veedu Medical College, Puducherry.


The need for such a textbook was felt as books on the subject are mostly written by foreign authors, he added. There are a few foreign contributions in the book as well.


The targeted readers of the book would be medical, physiotherapy and pharmacy students, as well as, practicing doctors. Every year, the book will be revised and a new edition published.


Speaking about the various aspects of the book he said, “All chapters were run through anti-plagiarism software. I have included sketches of the human anatomy and provided charts, x-ray and scan images from our own collection,”


Dr. Devarajan also plans to write an e-book in the near future.
