TN: 2 more colleges get MCI nod, total 800 seats added this year

Chennai: The Medical Council of India(MCI), has granted permission to Ponnayan Ramanujam Institute of Medical Sciences in Mahabalipuram and Annai Medical College Hospital and Research Centre in Sriperumbudur to admit students. Both the colleges are new self financing institutions.

The apex educational body has given permission for admitting 150 students each in the two colleges and surrendering of 97 seats each to the government pool as per rules.

Permission to admit students has also been granted to permitted Karpagam Faculty of Medical Sciences and Research, Coimbatore; Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Medical College, Perambalur; Madha Medical College, Kundrathur; and Sree Moogambigai Institute of Medical Sciences, Kanyakumari by the MCI.

The total number of seats surrendered by these colleges are 593. At the beginning of the counselling session there were 735 seats available, inclusive of those surrendered by the institutions.

Ragas Dental College has also been given permission to admit students.With 18 seats in Government dental colleges and 1,196 seats in self-financing medical colleges; 280 seats have been surrendered to the government pool, said officials.

With 2 new medical inclusions along with additional admission permissions to other medical/dental colleges of the state an additional 800 MBBS seats have been created in the state.

The Oversight Committee on the MCI having granted permission for admissions, has also cleared the way for Tamil Nadu’s Dr. MGR Medical University to carry out inspections and grant the colleges provisional affiliation. The agreement between the colleges and the state government allows them to share 40% to 60% of the seats.

Admissions to the self financing colleges affiliated to the state government and the state medical colleges are being conducted based on the class 12 marks and the 69% rule of reservation. Students being counselled in this phase are not supposed to have cleared the national eligibility cum entrance (NEET) test.
