Thiruvanathapuram Medical College all set to become Centre for Excellence

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state government in an effort to change the face of the Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College has decided to make it a centre for excellence. An allocation of Rs. 400 crore has been earmarked for it, in the Ist phase of Implementation 'Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram,' in the 2017-18 budget. The fund is being released by the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB).


The government in its effort of up gradation of the college has engaged the Infrastructure Kerala Limited (Inkel) as the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for the fulfilment of this ambitious project. An SPV being part of the rules of KIIFB.


Earlier, the government had also taken on the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC), as a consultant for preparation of the master plan for the college. INKEL was also recommended as the SPV by KSIDA.


The government was informed by the KSIDC that SPCs should carry out the entire project and that there wasn't any need for KSIDC to work on its implementation.


The master plan is supposed to be based on the draft plan prepared by Habitat Technology group, assisted by the alumni association of the college and the Centre of Excellence Project submitted by the college.The master plan is to incorporate patients, doctors, students and visitor concerns. The plan also incorporates proposals to set up operation theatres, equipment of international standards and facilities for each of the departments. All these are meant to be part of the future development issues that the plan proposes to address.


The 140-acre campus now houses the medical college, hospital, Sri Chitra Tirunal Centre for Medical Sciences and Technology, nursing college, Regional Cancer Centre, the office of the Directorate of Medical Education, SAT Hospital, dental college, and pharmacy college, reported TNIE.
