Thiruvanathapuram: The issue of patients having a hard time locating departments or other important facilities at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital came up in the Assembly last week . MLA’s spoke of the immense problems that patients faced in the hospital trying to locate linking facilities at the hospital after finishing with one, as they were not located close to each other.

"The casualty is located at one end, and another facility like scanning could be at the other end. The patient would die before he was taken from one place to the other,’’said MLA, K S Sabarinadhan .

Health Minister, K K Shylaja giving a clarification said that this was due to the manner the hospitals were planned in the state. She said often new structures came up as and when funds were available, leading to the haphazard expanse of the place.

The government she said planned to handle this problem at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital by implementing the '400 crore modernization project, announced last year. It had earmarked the money for implementing a master plan designed by the medical college alumni association, the district administration, and Habitat Tech district administration Group.

‘’The master plan is ready. The Health Department is hoping for funds through the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB),’’ the minister said in the House on Wednesday reports The New Indian Express.

Located in the Northern part of the city the sprawling campus has several other hospitals in addition to the Medical College Hospital. These include the Regional Cancer Centre, the Sree Chitra Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology and the SAT Hospital.
