Telangana to increase retirement age to overcome paucity of faculty in Govt medical colleges
Hyderabad: The state government of Telangana is all set to increase the retirement age of doctors at government hospital from the present 58 years to 62 years. This decision has been taken keeping in mind acute shortage of experienced medical teachers essential for running undergraduate, post-graduate and super-specialty medical courses, as per norms of the Medical Council of India (MCI).
With the Chief Minister nodding in consent to the proposal, it has become almost certain that the retirement age will increase to the proposed 62 years in Telangana.
The state is on its way to set up new medical colleges in Telangana, including others in Adilabad, Mahabubnagar, Siddipet, and Suryapet. These colleges with semi-autonomous status will have their retirement age for doctors fixed at 65 years.
The MCI has made it mandatory for faculty doctors to be on regular rolls.These doctors have to be adequately qualified and experienced for super-specialty seats as per the MCI norms. Government institutions in remote areas face a more acute shortage of experienced doctors, forcing patients to travel long distances in search of medical care.
MCI strictures regarding quality maintenance in education for retaining of undergraduate and PG medical seats, several States, besides the Ministry of Health, Medical and Family Welfare have already increased the age of retirement.
January saw the Health Ministry increase the retirement age of general duty medical officers and AYUSH specialists and those employed with Central Health Services i.e. Central Government Health Services (CGHS) and hospitals, under Armed Forces and Railways to 65 years, reports Telangana Today.
In May last year, Andhra Pradesh had increased the retirement age from 60 years to 63 years in all State-run hospitals. The retirement age of AYUSH doctors was also increased to 63 years.
On the issue of lack of promotions to senior doctors, presently employed, the health officials are proposing the introduction of regular promotions based on MCI norms of following the assessment promotion scheme. The officials will also be rotating the HODs to ensure all the eligible doctors get a chance to hold senior administrative posts in State-run hospitals.
The health officials, in the coming weeks, will be setting up a committee that will work on the proposal of enhancing the retirement age.
