Telangana: Now legal confusion over last date of admission to GMCs

Telangana: The MCI members and Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences Vice-Chancellor hold a different legal view on the last date of admissions to GMCs in the state.

There is another important fact to be taken into account here. NEET-2 has just been conducted on July 24. With the NEET results to be announced in August, it seems nearly impossible to close medical admission by August 31. However, a final notification on EAMCET-3 is yet to be issued by the state government. Till that time the students will be in a wait and watch mode.

MCI view

As per the MCI legal terms, the last date for medical admission- for first year MBBS students is August 31. The fact is supported as per Medical Council of India's (MCI) Regulations on Graduate Medical Education (RGME), 1997.

MCI member Dr K Ramesh Reddy said to TOI that, "Till last year, the last date for first-year MBBS admissions in medical colleges used to be September 30 as mentioned in Appendix E of RGME. But this rule was amended in January 2016, advancing the admissions deadline to August 31 through a notification in Gazette of India."

Even after the amendment was done, the note attached to it clearly implied that under any circumstances, the last date for admission will not be given an extension. It will continue to remain August 31 as per the MCI regulation.

The RGME also goes on to state that any student "identified as having obtained admission after the last date for closure of admission be discharged from the course of study."

KNRUHS view

Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS) vice-chancellor Dr B Karunakar Reddy says the deadline for admissions is September 30.

Dr B Karunakar Reddy in his statement implied that September 30 is the last date as per the information on page 10 of RGME. The university has sought clarification on the matter of the amended rule in the RGME from MCI. The council is yet to respond on the matter.

TSCHE view

The Telangana State Council for Higher Education (TSCHE) -- on whose behalf the JNTU conducted T Eamcet I and II respectively – agree with KNRUHS on the matter.

TSCHE chairman Prof T Papi Reddy said to TOI that the September 30 deadline is already in vogue. "In case there are extraordinary circumstances delaying the admissions, the government can approach the Supreme Court to relax the deadline," he said.
