Hyderabad: The Oversight Committee on the Medical Council of India (MCI), appointed by the supreme Court has given a second lease of life to three private medical colleges by allowing them to start taking in 150 students each, for the academic session 2016-17. However, the riders attached to this approval is that after September 30, the colleges will be inspected to look into whether the deficiencies listed out by MCI have been overcome. The move has been condemned by experts saying that medicos will suffer, if these colleges were to be blacklisted later.
These colleges include
- RVM Medical college in Medak,
- Mahavir Institute of Medical Sciences in Ranga Reddy
- Maheshwara Medical College in Patancheru.
The approval on the face of it, if everything goes well will raise the existing seats from 1,900 to 2,350 seats in private medical colleges. Medical aspirants under the convener quota in Eamcet-3 and Management quota in Neet-2 stand to benefit from it.
According to sources in the MCI, the conditional approval should have been given after the new applicants had been checked on whether they had overcome the deficiencies observed by the apex educational institution. This is being said because lacunae emerging later would cause a setback for the students.
“At the most, the SCMOCMCI (Supreme Court-Mandated Oversight Committee) should have appointed another inspection team to find out if these new applicants addressed all deficiencies or not before giving them a second chance,” said Dr K Ramesh Reddy
Earlier, the MCI had rejected the applications on the plea of inadequate manpower and improper infrastructural facilities.
