Telangana: The recently established ESIC Medical College Erragadda will start operations by offering 100 seats in 2016-17. The new medical college campus is spread over an area of 30 acres. 40% of the seats will be provided under reservation for children of workers.

A recent report in the Hindu implied that the medical aspirants in the state should look forward to seeking admission in the new medical college. The best physical infrastructure-in terms of installed equipments and more- has been put in place in the medical college. We aim to be among the best in the country, says Dr. M. Srinivas, dean and in-charge of ESIC Medical College, Erragadda to the media.

The medical college has installed biometric attendance systems and will provide 700 hostel rooms for doctors and other staff-which also means 100% accommodation. In addition, it will provide two-bedroom staff quarters 130 members, telemedicine facilities, e-library, among other important facilities.

If the Union Minister of State for Labour, Bandaru Dattatreya along with the group of doctors (with the Dean and in- charge of the college, Dr. M. Srinivas leading the group), can set up things at a higher pace, then the medical institute is likely to draw a lot of attention from students who are seeking medical admissions at an affordable cost.

In the beginning of this year only, MCI has not given permission to the said medical college. The council had earlier noted deficiencies in faculty and nursing staff. Besides, there was a low patient attendance, nil bed occupancy, no functional units including OT, ICU and others.

Only later, in a quick span of 100 days, the union minister, with his team were able to hire 90 key medical specialists and other staff. Equipment worth Rs 100 crore was also installed at the medical college. Only, then the new medical institute was granted approval from the MCI in June, 2016.

Compare this with the fact that even though there was a huge amount of Rs 1,000 crore allotted to this GMC project, four years back; there was no significant progress on the project. It is reported that almost 63 lakh insured people were in line for treatment.

"We take pride in the fact that we have no ghost faculty and we have been transparent in our dealings. The entire credit goes to the Union Minister as he relentlessly pursued the case. We are all set for starting classes and aim to be among the best in the country," affirms Dr. Srinivas.

The medical college has already started contact programs with 12th standard students in government and private schools; to build awareness of the college.
