Telangana: Dilemma over reconducting Eamcet

The Telangana government is in a fix over taking a decision to conduct a re-examination of Eamcet, after an FIR has been registered in the alleged paper leak development. If the state government moves ahead in its decision to hold an exam again, then it will cross the deadlines of MCI for admitting medical students. As a result of this delay in medical admissions, there will also be a delay in starting the classes.

The new academic session for first-year MBBS students is to begin on August 1 under the MCI's Regulations on Graduate Medical Education, 1997. There was also a recent notification issues in January 2016 in the Gazette of India, the MCI rule book which fixed August 31 as the deadline for medical admission of the last student.

"If the MCI admissions calendar, especially the August 31 deadline for completing admission process, is extended beyond this date, it would attract the wrath of MCI as it has the power to declare an entire batch of medicos as illegal," said Dr K Ramesh Reddy, member, MCI to TOI.

MCI has also given fixed dates for conducting the two rounds of counselling for MBBS admissions. The state government has already seen a delay in the counselling after the NEET row. According to the rule book, the 1st and 2nd rounds of counselling should be held between June 25-July 5 and July 23-30 respectively. However, the state authorities here have not yet completed the certificate verification for EAMCET-2.

Telangana CID registered an FIR in connection with the alleged leak of the Medical EAMCET-2 question paper. CID found in its preliminary inquiry that there was prima facie a case for registering an FIR. "We have got some clues. We found out some prima facie signs of malpractice. We are trying to find out what exactly happened," a senior CID officer told PTI.
