Tamil Nadu:Hi-tech burns ward to begin at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital

Coimbatore: Three government medical colleges have been selected get high tech burns ward in the next one year, under the National Programme for Prevention and Management of Burn Injuries. One of them, Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) has been sanctioned a sum of Rs.1.24 crore, for the hospital to build a new block, exclusively to treat burn injuries and facilitate itself with new equipment. The hospital gets around 500 admissions in its burns ward every year.


"Out of Rs 1.24 crore, Rs 78.30 lakh is to be used for construction purposes and Rs 46.5 lakh for procurement of equipment," said , Resident Medical Officer, Dr A Soundaravel, who also confirmed the college having received the grant.


The new burns ward is expected to be equipped with laminar flooring, better air vents and facilities such as proving patients protein shakes etc. "The new burns ward is likely to come up on top of the outpatient block," he said. "We are getting a plan ready for construction of the block which will be around 20,000 sq.ft," said the medical officer.


The present 18 bedded ward has witnessed 266 deaths, this year.


"The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, has a prototype of an ideal burns ward. We plan to model it along those lines or replicate it," said another CMCH official, as reported by the TOI.


The other two colleges selected under the burns program alongside the CMCH are: Government Vellore Medical College and Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College, Salem.
