Tamil Nadu: Twin sisters secure medical admissions with no money to pay for tuition fees now

Tamil Nadu: A proud moment for the parents of twin sisters of Tamil Nadu, after they secured medical admission in reputed GMCs in the state, was short lived. The parents, both daily laborers, have no money to pay for tuition fees; which will be a minimum amount of Rs 1 lakh. They have till now only paid the admission fees of Rs 17,000 for their daughters medical education. Their celebrations, at the moment have come to a halt.


The twin sisters are called R.A.Athya and A.Aarthi, and they live in Erumapatti village in Namakkal district.


The twin girls has done brilliant in their academic studies, with both scoring good marks in the 12th standard exam. Athya has scored 1127 out of 1200 and a cut off of 193. Aarthi scored even higher- 1152 marks with a cut off of 196.


Aarthi got admission to Stanley medical college. Athya secured a medical seat in Omandurar medical college. Athya has a wish to become an oncologist. Aarthi wants to be a cardiologist.


"I have paid the admission fees of Rs 17,000 for my daughter's medical studies. But I don't have the money to pay their tuition fee and hostel fee," said the 50-year-old R.Arumugam, who works as a daily wage labourer at an iron workshop to a local newspaper.


Their mother is an agricultural labourer. Now, they are required to pay an amount of at least Rs 1 lakh for the tuition and hostel fee, to see their daughters pursuing their medical studies.


"Last year, our grandmother was bed-ridden. My father took a loan and spent on her treatment but she died.


"Just before her death, she told us that if we were doctors we would have saved her life. Therefore, we wish to fulfill our grandmother's wish by becoming doctors," says Aarthi.
