Tamil Nadu to add 1,350 MBBS seats in 2020-21
Chennai: In a major development towards enhancing the medical education sector in the state, the Tamil Nadu government is set to add 1,350 MBBS seats in the next academic year 2020-21 by establishing a total of 9 medical colleges. Each medical college will have 150 MBBS seats for students.
As of July 2019, the state is reported to have had 7150 MBBS seats across 49 Medical colleges. Of these 3400 MBBS seats are in 26 government medical colleges while 3750 MBBS seats are there in the state 23 private medical institutes.
With the setting up of 9 medical colleges, the state will get 1,350 MBBS seats taking the MBBS pool to 8500+.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported about the confirmed establishment of 6 medical colleges with the sanctioned amount of Rs 600 crore released recently for commencing the construction work of 6 new medical colleges in Dindigul, Namakkal, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, the Nilgiris and Tiruppur districts.

Now, according to a recent report by The Hindu, the Technical Evaluation Committee of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has given the "clearance" to establish three more government medical colleges in Tamil Nadu.
The State government had applied seeking permission to establish the colleges in Krishnagiri, Nagapattinam and Tiruvallur districts.
Certain sources told the daily that the final decision on establishing the medical institutes will be taken by the Empowered Committee of the Union Health Ministry. The Chief Minister has allotted land for all three proposed medical colleges.
However, the Executive Committee's approval is final and it will be known after their meeting in New Delhi by next week, a Health department official informed TNIE, adding, "if the colleges are approved, the State will be adding nine more government medical colleges and 1,350 MBBS seats in 2020-21. Approximately Rs 450 crore will be allotted for each college."
The state is also making developments on the PG front. Recently, 2 Tamil Nadu medical colleges bagged the approval by the Medical Council of India (MCI) to offer PG Medical course in MD Blood Transfusion and Immunohematology with a total of 5 seats — 2 at Madurai Medical College and 3 have been approved for the Tirunelveli Medical College. These medical institutes will begin the course from the next academic year 2020.
