Tamil Nadu: Students don't mind paying the hefty fine of Rs 10 Lakh for securing admission in GMCs
Tamil Nadu: For students seeking admission in GMCs, even paying a hefty fine of Rs 10 Lakh doesn't seem to hold them. This is the transfer cost that many students are paying for getting admission in state GMCs from Government Dental Colleges. If we compare this with the cost they might have to incurred for taking admission in self financing medical colleges; then a sum of Rs 10 Lakh seems a wise decision by students and their parents.
The fine of Rs 10 Lakh this year for the transfer to GMCs is in statistical view of many students seeking a shift for admission in medical colleges in 2014. Following which the transfer fee was hiked from Rs 5 Lakh to Rs 10 Lakh- double the amount.
The 4th day of the 1st please of counselling for UG course saw many students- who were granted allotment in Government Dental colleges last year -seeking admission in GMCs this academic year. There is a reported case of two students who have been shifted from government dental college to a GMC paying a fine of Rs 10 Lakh.
Officials told Hindu that "Despite the fine, the students sought the medical college, as otherwise they would have to pay hefty fees charged by self-financing medical colleges," a senior medical education official said.
By the end of 4th day of counselling, reportedly 473 seats have been allocated for medical course this year in GMCs and self-financing medical colleges. Besides, 46 candidates have taken admission in government dental college.
Since the beginning of the counselling, 2,101 aspirants have been given allotment in medical colleges. 49 candidates have been granted admission in government dental college.
However, students and parents are worried as BC category seats have vanished. Students with a cut-off of 196.5 are now in the waiting list, with seats now available only in self financed institutes. Officials also expect 970 seats in self-financed dental institutions to reach a completion.
