Chennai: Government Medical Colleges in the city that counselled aspirants for post graduate medical seats for 36 vacancies in MD/MS/diploma programs and 2 in Dentistry , rounded off their first phase of counselling on Thursday.

The four days of counselling saw 722 seat allotments done. Of the 1,450 students invited , only 950 showed up for the counselling sessions. 162 candidates are on the wait list of the authorities. Meanwhile the Secretary G. Selvarajan announced that the next date for counselling would be declared shortly.

The candidates can surrender their seats till May 31. The Delay to hold counselling for PG students was a result of the many court cases related to issues of in service doctors. The Directorate, Medical Education had to knock the council door seeking an extension for the sessions. The Counselling process got off the ground on Monday afternoon, despite protests being staged by Doctor Associations for those affiliated with the Government.

The Selection Committee is waiting for the deemed and private universities to forward their surrendered seat lists. Thursday was the last date for submission of applications for PG degree and diploma courses under the NRI quota in self-financing medical colleges and colleges under deemed universities in the State.

Health Secretary J. Radhakrishnan revealed that an overall seat increase of 26% had taken place in the current year.

“In the last five years, we got 131 seats. Similarly, with Pudukottai Medical College [being approved by the MCI], we would have added 960 MBBS seats in five years in government colleges,” he told the Hindu.
