Tamil Nadu: New Government Medical College with 150 MBBS seats inaugurated in Karur

The Medical Council of India (MCI) has sanctioned intake of 150 MBBS students for the medical college for this academic year. With this, the total number of medical colleges in the State of Tamil Nadu goes to 23.

Chennai: In a major development to the medical education sector of the state of Tamil Nadu, a new Government Medical College (GMC) has commenced its session with the allotment of 150 MBBS seats.


The Medical Council of India (MCI) has sanctioned intake of 150 MBBS students for the medical college for this academic year. The medical college was set up in line with the announcement made by the then Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa under Rule 110 in the State Assembly on August 12, 2014.

The inauguration of the medical college was recently done by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami in Karur district. The college was set up at Sanapiratti at a cost of Rs 115.71 crore and it was inaugurated by the Chief Minister through video-conferencing from the State Secretariat here.

With this, the total number of medical colleges in the State goes to 23.


An official release here said the GO was issued on January 19, 2015, and another GO allocating Rs 269.58 crore for constructing the college was also issued on June 27 last year.

As per the MCI rules, the college has been equipped with all facilities for admitting first-year students like administrative buildings, hostels for boys and girls, residential quarters for Dean and others, quarters for faculty, a hostel for nurses and other residential blocks, which were constructed at a cost of Rs 115.71 crore.


The government has also allocated Rs 25.64 crore for purchase of necessary equipment, which was being procured by the State Medical Council. A total of 985 permanent staff, including faculty, doctors, nurses and paramedics were appointed as per the MCI guidelines.
