Tamil Nadu Medical College gets MCI Approval for 100 additional MBBS seats

Tirunelveli: The Medical Council of India (MCI) has given its nod to add 100 more MBBS seats at the Tirunelveli Medical College for the academic year 2019-20.


After the addition of a said number of MBBS seats to 150 MBBS seats already at the medical college, the total intake will become 250. With this, the medical college would become the third institute to have said number of seats in the State after Madras Medical College and Stanley Medical College.


The confirmation to this effect came via an official communique by the MCI. Certain sources from the health department told TOI that they recently got a confirmation from the Medical Council of India (MCI) that the seats could be officially allotted once the state government gave the undertaking.

An official further informed the New Indian Express that the letter approving the increase in the number of seats in Tirunelveli Medical College has been signed by the secretary-level officials of Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.


MCI had conducted two inspections for the seat allocation at Tirunelveli Medical College and both went satisfactory. The MCI has intimated the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) and the government that once the undertaking is given, the official permission for seat allotment could be given in 15 days.


The state had applied for 95 additional UG seats at Madurai Medical College and also for the permission to start the medical college in Karur in 2019 offering 150 medical seats, adds TOI.


Recently, the centre has granted its permission for setting up a new government medical college and hospital at Karur and commence MBBS course for 150 seats at the Institute for the academic year 2019-20.
