Tamil Nadu: MBBS/BDS counselling results in 730 seat allotments

Chennai: 730 seat allotments were done after the first day of counselling for MBBS and BDS courses in Chennai.The ten rankers who have topped the general merit list have chosen Madras Medical College for admission. Health Minister C. Vijaya Baskar has given away the allotment order to the top ten rankers of the general category under the single window system. The counselling for the general category has begun.

Aadithya Mahesh MV at third position with 1194 marks and Gnanavel EJ with a score of 986/1000 from Andhra Pradesh State Board are among the three toppers, with a cut off of 200 marks this year.

Adithya’s father K. Manikandan a stringer attached to Deepika Daily , works in Thiruvananthapuram. Basically from Vilavancode in Kanniyakumari district. He shifted to Thiruvananthapuram for his daughter’s education. Adithya took the National Eligibility and Entrance Test, but did not attempt the Kerala State’s common medical entrance test.

“For every wrong answer there is negative marking apart from losing the marks for the question,” she explained.

Gnanavel did not consider NEET, being from Tamil Nadu. His father E. Jagadeesan is a medical shop worker from Podhatturpettai , 23 km from Tiruttani. Gnanavel, has scored 150/150 marks each in Botany, Zoology, Chemistry and 198/200 in Sanskrit, and 188/200 in English. He wants to be a neurologist.

Topper V. Vignesh, son of a State Transport bus conductor R. Vadivelu, is a first generation graduate. He wants to become a nephrologist as “there are a lot of people with kidney diseases and the speciality is different from cardiology or neurology.”

State toppers Aarthi V. and K.H. Jeshwanth, have lost top slots in the merit list. But are not too upset, as both have an admission with MMC.

“I lost because I am younger than them,” said Jeshwanth, rank- 17. Aarthi , rank- 10, gives the same reason. Varshini S, of SVS Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Samayapuram in Tiruchi, who gave up her seat to her classmate N. Janani, under the ex-servicemen category, has got admission in MMC.

Dr. Vijaya Baskar says,’ the State government had added 710 seats in the last five years and this year with the ESIC Coimbatore having got permission to admit students , has added 100 more seats.

3,694 candidates including, 159 candidates, under special category, are invited for the first phase of counselling.

‘The ranks of at least 696 candidates in the general list have to be adjusted following revaluation and re totaling, ‘ says, Selection Secretary, G. Selvarajan.

Four change of ranks have happened from among those who have attended the counselling session. The first day saw candidates choosing seats in government medical colleges, only. At the end of counselling with 730 seats allotted in various categories, there are no vacancies in the OC category but seats are available in ESIC Medical College, K.K. Nagar and the government dental college in this category reports Hindu.
