Chandigarh: The Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32 Disciplinary Committee in its recommendation has suggested suspension of a 3rd-year medical student for a month, a payment of Rs. 5000 as fine and has also disallowed him from holding any college committee office until he passes out. The erring student has been punished for having abused his teachers & attempt to blackmail a junior, through the use of a phone application that flashes a different number, while in use

"The committee has sent its recommendations. I need to study them," said Dr A K Janmeja, holding an additional charge, GMCH Director-Principal.

The Disciplinary Committee headed by Dr. Arjun Das had met last week to decide the student’s fate and the penalty to be imposed on him. The student, it is believed, had confessed to his actions in an apology rendered in writing to the principal.

Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that a third-year MBBS student at Government Medical College and Hospital (
GMCH
), Sector 32, was caught playing pranks, using a mobile application that can flash a different phone number while making a call and change the voice of the caller. The student was misusing this application to abuse his teachers. He also tried to blackmail his junior. Unfortunately for him, one of the faculty recognized his voice despite voice change and reported the matter to Director-Principal Dr A K Janmeja.

Son of a well-known city-based doctor, he was protected by the institution, say sources. "A complaint was sent to the cyber cell too. But the complaint was withdrawn as the college wanted to handle the case internally without harming the career of the student," said a member of the committee.

The incident surfaced on September 5th, and the college authorities had readied the action to be taken against him a month ago."It took the authorities long to take a decision on such an act. If the recommendations are not implemented soon, it will send a wrong message to the other students as well affecting the quality of medical education here," a senior doctor at GMCH told TOI.
