Surprise MCI inspection at B J Medical College creates Havoc

Ahmadabad: BJ Medical College and Hospital, Asarwa staff and professors were in for a surprise on Monday, when three MCI inspectors walked through the college gates at 9 am,for an inspection.The visit caused much apprehension among faculty and administrators alike. The apprehension prevailed due to the recent controversy raised by the transfer orders of faculty, issued by the college authorities. The transfers were ordered to express staff strength .to MCI inspectors. The transfer orders issued by the Bj Medical College authorities, were done thinking that their own inspections were due in the 3rd week of February.


Owing to the predicted date of inspection, nearly, 50 teaching staff was transferred to government medical colleges in Himmatnagar, Patan, and Bhavnagar. While 25 members of staff were called in to B J Medical College from Sola and Gotri. "But when there was news that the inspection had been delayed, the transfers were revoked," said a senior professor, preferring to stay anonymous


The faculty present on the premises during the MCI inspection on Monday told Mirror, "Three MCI members arrived for the inspection at 9 am on Monday. Several professors had to rush home to get their registration papers and other documents as the first thing the MCI inspectors did was do a head count of 300 professors and check their documents."


The process which took place in three separate halls had MCI officials verifying documents of 100 professors each; the inspecting officials also checked applications of those on leave.


The officials took a round of all the wards in the Civil Hospital, attached to the college, checking and tallying patient occupancy rate, vis-à-vis student and faculty strength. According to informed sources, MCI inspectors carried out an infrastructural inspection on Tuesday.


The inspection is recorded on video as per norms; a report was to be made by the inspectors on Tuesday, and submitted to the the MCI in 48 hours. The inspection , a routine process, is undertaken every five years in colleges with 250 undergraduate seats, in order to check whether the stipulated MCI norms are being followed.
