Supreme Court Stay on MBBS Seat Increase at Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences
New Delhi: The future of 50 recently admitted MBBS students at Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences hangs in balance as the Supreme Court has stayed the permission accorded to the said medical college by the Kerala HC of increasing its MBBS pool for the current year from 100 to 150 seats.
The matter has been now listed for 19th September, 2018
Puducherry Institute of Medical Sciences was one of the 82 medical colleges which had been denied renewal permission by the Union Health Ministry based on the recommendations of the Medical Council of India owing to the infrastructure shortcomings at the said medical colleges.

In case of PIMS, the college had been denied an increase of 50 MBBS seats for the current academic session- 2018-19. Challenging the said decision, the said medical college knocked on the doors of the state High Court, where by the Madras high court on August 28 provided relief to PIMS by quashing the Union health and family welfare ministry's order and directing the ministry to grant renewal of permission for increase in number of MBBS seats from 100 to 150 for the academic year 2018-19.
Challenging the said order, the Medical Council of India filed an SLP with the Supreme Court and on 05-09-2018 when the matter was mentioned, the apex court listed the matter for 19th and stated that "In the meantime, there shall be stay of the operation of the impugned judgment and order."
It is reported that based on the HC order, PIMS already admitted 50 more students on its own accord. Objecting to this filling of seats, centralized admission committee (CEE) intervened and secured 17 MBBS seats under government quota on Monday
