Study Pressure: 4th Year MBBS student commits suicide
Srinagar: In an unfortunate incident, a female MBBS student at Srinagar Medical College allegedly committed suicide due to the overpressure of her studies. The deceased was studying in the 4th year of her MBBS course.
The deceased identified as Shiwani Bansal, 22, a resident of Jaspur in Udham Singh Nagar district of the Uttarakhand. She was found hanging from the ceiling after the police forced open the door to her hostel room. In a suicide note, Shiwani said that she wanted to be a cricketer and was ending her life as she was unable to bear the burden of pursuing the MBBS course, police said.
"Ab mai thak gaee hoon. Mai kabhi bhi MBBS nahi karna chahti thi, (cricket) khelna chahti thi (I am tired now. I never wanted to study MBBS, I wanted to play (cricket)," she wrote in a 12-line suicide note that was found from her hostel room, police informed Indian Express.
The incident came to light when the hostel administration called the police around 12:10 am on Sunday stating that the one of a student from their hostel is not opening the gate despite repeated knocks.
"Upon receiving information, a police team rushed to the girl's hostel. We climbed up the ventilator and found her hanging and the room's door was opened by breaking the lock," the inspector informed TOI
When contacted, Dr Chandra Mohan Rawat, principal of Srinagar Medical College, told TOI, "MBBS is one of the toughest courses in the world and one should be mentally, emotionally and physically strong to keep the zeal for good five years. It seems she succumbed to study pressure."
The police inspector stated that they have registered the case and initiating the further investigation. "We will talk to her friends, teachers, warden and others to know more about the case. We will also match her handwriting with the suicide note," reports HT
