Shimla: Two more government medical colleges have been issued letters of permission(LOPs) to take in 100 MBBS students for their Ist batches in an individual capacity. This has led to seat numbers going up to 600 in the 6 state medical colleges. However, the merit quota students have suffered a setback as only 274 seats have come their way. In some cases fee hike

Following is the seat break up in the state’s colleges:

  • Dr S Radhakrishnan Government Medical College, Hamirpur, Mandi; Lal Bahadur Shastri Government Medical College, Nerchowk -granted 100 MBBS course seats each this year,

  • The four other medical colleges -Dr YS Medical College, Nahan, Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla, Dr RP Medical College, Tanda (Kangra), Pt Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Chamba -already have a 100 seats each.

Seat Division

Out of 600 seats, the Quota seat break up is as follows:

  • 90 seats (15 per cent) are reserved under the all-India quota,

  • Lal Bahadur Shastri Medical College has 30 seats reserved under the ESI quota

  • The total seats available under the state quota are 480 ; with 73 reserved for Scheduled Castes; 34 for Scheduled Tribes; 22 for physically challenged and 14 for OBC. However, the number of NRI seats has been curtailed from 34 to 20 due to high fee.

The Chamba, Nahan and Hamirpur colleges in their open category have been granted 49 seats each; 48 in the IGMC, 47 in Tanda medical college and only 32 in Nerchowk College in Mandi.

In the category reserved for wards of ex-servicemen and single girl child 6 seats have been granted, 5 to the Tibetan refugees and 1 for migrant ward from Jammu and Kashmir.

“The admissions will be on the basis of NEET merit through centralized counselling to be conducted by Himachal Pradesh University and separate lists under each category will be released after counselling,” said sources.

The other important aspect that the state authorities have not pondered over is a review of the fee hike allowed to Maharishi Markandeshwar Medical College, (MMMC) Kumarhatti, Solan; and the fee for 50 percent state quota seats being Rs 7.70 lakh per annum, against Rs 60,000 in government medical colleges reported the Tribune.

A 10% fee hike has also been granted to MMMC despite objections from both parents and students. According to parents, the state quota fee is beyond the reach of people coming from average economic backgrounds; therefore, making medical education under quota category inaccessible.

There is a demand from the parents to subsidize quota seats (75 in number)at Maharishi Markandeshwar University, which are presently inaccessible to the man of common means.

In government medical colleges the NRI quota fee is $20,000 (about Rs 14 lakh).

The management quota and NRI seats in Maharishi Markandeshwar Medical College (MMMC) cost $33,327 (about Rs 23 lakh) per annum. In dental Colleges, the government has fixed the annual fee at Rs 81,760 for government quota seats in private dental colleges. On the other hand, it is Rs 30,000 in government colleges. The hike is 2.9 times.

The MMMC, fee difference for government quota seats is about 12.5 times more as compared to the fee in government medical colleges.
