Staff shortage crisis at GMC Manjeri to be resolved by Health Secretary

Malappuram: Casualty Services of Government Medical College, Manjeri, have been badly hit due to the existing staff shortage. The Health Secretary in order to resolve the current staff crisis is planning to have a meeting at Thiruvananathapuram.


The staff crisis has already led to widespread public protest as casualty services have been brought to a halt by hospital authorities due to doctor shortage. The Muslim League and the Congress are already in dialogue with the government to resolve the shortage of staff issue.


When a section of doctors refused to take up casualty duty at the hospital, the Superintendent and Regional Medical Officer were forced to man the casualty of the hospital.


At present there are only 9 junior resident doctors. The 22 senior residents who were appointed have yet to undertake duty, forcing the junior doctors to work 24 days a month at the casualty.


It is being said, the college authorities are yet to take action against staff, that is not following the Principal or Superintendent’s instructions. It is alleged that the hospital administration has failed to prevent absenteeism among doctors and senior teachers of various departments.
