SN Medical College buildings to be razed, declared unsafe

Agra: An infrastructural survey carried out by an Investigation Committee, appointed by the Indian Medical Council, has declared 12 of the buildings at SN Medical College unsafe.


The college established 163 years ago, has had buildings added on in time, with old ones being renovated, periodically, on the 20-acre campus. Many of these buildings identified by a King George’s Medical University, Lucknow team recently, are either vacant or just a few rooms are in use.


A report submitted by the team mentioned that the buildings need to be broken down, as they pose a threat to both staff and patients. The buildings identified include cardiac block, handicapped workshop, animal house, old blood bank, old medicine department building, animal house, old blood bank, annexe girls hostel, part of the senior boys' hostel building, old OPD block, de-addiction centre, PG girls hostel, and old pant hostel. The animal house and the old medicine department have been out of use for the past 20 years.The old hostel has a few rooms occupied. Most house kitchens and storerooms in them.


Dr, Ajay Agarwal, Hospital's Chief Superintendent talking with TOI, said, "We had already sent a request to the government to demolish eight of the 12 buildings. Now, we will inform the PWD to carry out the demolition and thereafter request construction of new buildings in their place."
