SMS Medical College- No Medicos with qualifying Attendance, No Student's Union

Jaipur: Sawai Man Singh Medical College(SMS) has a lull prevailing while all other medical colleges in the state are busy preparing for the oncoming student union polls. The reason for the lull at SMS happens to be that all students who stood up for the election were rejected for want of attendance at college. An indication of the defective attendance system of the college which indeed seems to be asking for enormous changes.

It has come as a bit of a setback for those looking for an elective body for the college.

"No candidate is eligible for election due to a shortage of attendance as per Lyngdoh Committee recommendations, " was the statement issued by the election committee.

A recent report in TOI states that Nine candidates had filed nominations for president post, 11 for vice president post, nine for general secretary post, eight for joint secretary post, five for literary secretary, six for cultural secretary, six for games secretary posts and three had filed for girls' representatives. But, all nominations have been cancelled.

"How is could be possible that no one is eligible for contesting polls. There were 57 candidates for different posts but all of them have attendance less than 75%," said Manoj Arya a 2012-batch student of SMS medical college. Students spoke of the biometric attendance, not in place.

"For the past four years, SMS medical college is not holding students' union polls as no candidate is found eligible for contesting polls. In absence of an elected body of medical students, in the past four years, no proper sports event, cultural events literary events have been organized," Dr. Mukesh Mehla, Secretary, Jaipur Association of Resident Doctors and former Games Committee Secretary of UG students told TOI.

He said that a way had to be found for the elections of the student body taking place.

For the past four years, these nominations of the President, Secretary, and other post holders were made on the basis of academic performances.

However, nominations have to now be replaced by elected representatives was the student opinion.
