Thiruvanathapuram: With the Supreme Court consenting to admissions of 400 students to three self-financing medical colleges in the State which had been debarred by the Medical Council of India(MCI), due to infrastructural deficiencies, medical aspirants have good days in store for them.

The apex court bench said that admission had been allowed keeping in mind the future of 400 students who had already been given a place in these colleges.

The Supreme Court passed a detailed order on the writ petitions filed by DM College, Wayanad; Mount Zion Medical College, Adoor, and Al Azhar College, Thodupuzha.

The judiciary was finding the petitions filed by medical colleges burdensome and therefore, felt a proper mechanism had to be evolved for it. It further opined that the MCI, government representatives, and management should come together and work on a with a blueprint for admissions.

The MCI had debarred these colleges from student admissions due to the deficiencies observed. However, a high power committee of the Central government had dismissed them as minor problems.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court cautioned that the admission permission was for this year alone and no High Court should take leverage and consent to medical college admission.

It has been observed that while the central government and the MCI had opposed the clearance for admission, the state government had stood up to it saying that the deficiencies were minor.

The students had remitted the fee and furnished bank guarantees. Under such circumstances, the admissions should be ratified, the State government had submitted.

However, the apex education regulator observed that a 10% shortage of teaching staff would have an impact on the education to be imparted in these colleges, and therefore, had disallowed admissions for the year.

The bench will be hearing these writs again, reports Hindu.
