Karur: The Directorate of Medical Education has been handed over 17.49 acres at Sanapiratti land for construction of Karur Medical College by the Municipality after the Supreme Court granted a construction clearance to the institution.

The transfer of land happened immediately after receiving of the Supreme Court order, dismissing the appeal against the construction of the college at Sanapiratti, instead of Kuppuchipalayam.

The land measurements were recorded in the presence of the DME officials, Collector K. Govindaraj and senior officials of Local Administration and Revenue departments, among others. Documents related to site transfer from Karur Municipality to DME also changed hands. Stones were laid along the site for earmarking of boundaries as well.

S. Revathi, Dean, Karur Medical College, said since all hurdles had been removed, the Sanapirati site had now been officially transferred and was to be controlled by the DME. The site will now be handed over to the Public Works Department for carrying out the planned construction, the Dean informed.

Dr. Revathi also said that the site plan would now have to be altered as the earlier one was made keeping in mind a 30.27 acre at Sanapiratti in 2016. However, the DME had been transferred only 17.49 acre.

The takeover of the remaining piece had been delayed for the time being as the proposal for setting up of a park at the site lay pending with the court. Hence, a new plan would have to be made ready.

According to her the Chief Architect of the Public Works Department had been asked to revise the plan.

A 6 story building is in all probability in the pipeline for construction, as it will reduce costs to an extent she said.

The revised plan would be made available within a week, she added to the Hindu.
