Rajasthan to add 100 MBBS seats each at government medical colleges in Kota, Ajmer and Udaipur

Jaipur: Confident with its infrastructural facilities, the Rajasthan government is ready to take a huge step to enhance its MBBS pool quota. The state government has decided to hike 100 MBBS seats each at three medical colleges run under it.

The decision to increase the state's MBBS pool was taken in a recent meeting held under Medical Education Minister Raghu Sharma during which the officials discussed steps and proposals to strengthen medical services in hospitals attached to medical colleges.

Speaking to TOI, the Minister stated, "To deal with the shortage of doctors, the medical education department will take necessary measures to increase the number of MBBS seats in existing medical colleges of the state." "Proposals will be sent to Centre for increasing 100 MBBS seats each in Ajmer, Kota and Udaipur medical colleges," he added.

All the three concerned medical colleges have currently an annual intake of 150 students each. The move comes much in line with amendments introduced by the government that has increased the annual intake capacity of medical colleges to 250 seats.

As of now, the state has 1910 MBBS seats and 1154 PG seats along with 106 Super-Speciality (SS) seats in government-run medical colleges. In 8 private medical colleges of the state, there are 1150 MBBS seats, 539 PG seats and 49 seats for SS courses.

Directions issued to officials by Medical Education Minister

The Minister has further directed the officials to improve facilities for research programmes in medical colleges. "On the basis of requirement, multidisciplinary research units will be developed in medical colleges," he added while informing TOI about the plans.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported about the number of proposals sent by 28 states governments' to Health Ministry for increasing the PG pool quota. Rajasthan had sent 30 proposals to the Health Ministry for the increase of seats in Post Graduate Courses for the academic year 2019-20
